Reusable Bag Fundraiser at Scarborough High School

Scarborough teens involved in the high school ECOS club will be selling ‘limited edition’ reusable bags as an earth-friendly fundraiser .   ECOS, which stands for the Environmental Club of Scarborough, is an after school club that strives to heighten the local community’s awareness of environmental issues and encourage more eco-friendly lifestyles.

Earlier this week a survey in a USA Today snapshot poll showed some interesting statistics.  Readers were asked how often they “Bring Their Own Bag” to the grocery store.  Here are the results:
10% Always
19% Frequently
32% Occasionally
That leaves almost 40% who NEVER bring their own bag.  It makes you wonder — will the mainstream public ever catch on the  Bring You Own Bag movement?

As we are educated about the problems with global warming and our dependence on fossil fuels — we becoming more aware of our countries tendency toward over-consumption.  This over-consumption means more factories producing more and more products, which produces more and more pollution.  While it’s hard to convince American’s to ‘want less’ — there are many things we consume that are actually easy to give up.

Free Reusable Bags at Scarborough Farmers Market

In celebration of Scarborough’s 350th anniversary celebration, a Farmers Market will be held at Memorial Park on Saturday July 12th.

Scarborough Downs has generously dontated 500 free reusable grocery bags to be given away for the first 500 shoppers at the Farmer’s Market today!  Bags were produced by Bulletin Bag [.com] and are made of nonwoven polypropylene containing a minimum of 25% post consumer and post industrial recycled content.

Free Reusable Bag Giveaway at Shaw’s

Bulletin Bags offered for free tomorrow.  Limited edition Bulletin Bags will be available for free on June 14th at two Shaw’s locations in Southern Maine.  The bags will feature the winning design from the first ever Nurture Nature Design Contest.

Bags will be available at Shaw’s in Biddeford from 10 am to 12 pm and at Shaw’s in Scarborough from 1pm to 3pm.  Children involved in the contest will distribute the free bags!

Judging begins for reusable bag design contest

Suzette Bergeron (Owner of Bulletin Bag [.com]), Commissioner David Littell (Maine Department of Environmental Protection), Ted Koffman (D-Bar Harbor, Co-Chair Maine Natural Resources Committee), Yana Farrally-Plourde (Ateso Design) and Fred Abaroa (Marketer, Costa Vida Fresh Mexican Grill) will gather today to choose the winning design for the Nurture Nature Design Contest. Over 400 Maine students from York to Mt. Desert Island submitted designs for the contest.  Free bags will be sent to the contest participants and several hundred will be available to Shaw’s shoppers. The Nurture Nature Reusable Bag Drawing Contest was made possible by corporate sponsors Shaw’s, Dole Food Company, Gorton’s Seafood, Celestial Seasonings.
