{"id":446,"date":"2008-11-11T12:56:47","date_gmt":"2008-11-11T17:56:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bulletinbag.mivamerchant.net\/blog\/?p=446"},"modified":"2025-05-29T13:09:20","modified_gmt":"2025-05-29T17:09:20","slug":"thinking-about-reusable-bags-a-message-to-cashiers-and-baggers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bulletinbag.com\/blog\/thinking-about-reusable-bags-a-message-to-cashiers-and-baggers\/","title":{"rendered":"Thinking About Reusable Bags &#8211; A Message to Cashiers and Baggers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some didn&#8217;t see it coming, but the reusable bag movement has hit us like a big green tidal wave.\u00a0 Isn&#8217;t it time for retailers to implement better training to effectively promote this important trend?<\/p>\n<p>While it&#8217;s up to the consumer to bring their own bag, cashiers and baggers are the next line of defense in reducing wasteful plastic bags.\u00a0 Whether it&#8217;s the grocery store, the corner store, or the mall &#8212; retailers are the key to breaking the plastic habit.<\/p>\n<p>Consumers have started developing their own habits, like returning reusable bags to the car after unloading them, storing reusable bags near keys or writing &#8216;BRING YOUR OWN BAG&#8217; at the top of the grocery list.\u00a0 They might even carry a <a title=\"Folding Nylon Reusable Bag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bulletinbag.com\/polyester-or-nylon\/view-all-products.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">folding nylon reusable bag<\/a> in a purse, pocket or glove compartment.\u00a0 <a title=\"Bag Lady Blog\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bulletinbag.com\/blog.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">(&#8230;)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>So what habits need to be formed (or shall I say &#8216;broken&#8217;) at the retail level?\u00a0 Here&#8217;s are a few ideas for baggers, cashiers and those who train them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If someone brings their own bags, chances are they would like to walk out with out any plastic.\u00a0 Reusable bags can be packed with far more groceries than flimsy plastic bags, so fill them up!\u00a0 It may take a bit more time, but this is 2008 &#8212; it&#8217;s a small price to pay for a more responsible lifestyle.<\/li>\n<li>Ask before double-bagging meat.\u00a0 Many reusable bags (particularly cotton and other natural blends) can be easily thrown in with the weekly laundry.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t assume that meat, which is already wrapped in styrofoam and plastic, needs to be placed in another plastic bag.\u00a0 Some people may care, some don&#8217;t &#8212; the key is to ask.<\/li>\n<li>Many cashiers at non-grocery stores like Rite Aid, Office Depot, the corner store or the mall are starting to ask &#8220;Would you like a bag with that?&#8221;\u00a0 Usually this question is met with a puzzled consumer, a glance down at one or two items and the response &#8216;uh, actually no, I don&#8217;t need a bag&#8217;.\u00a0 BINGO!\u00a0 Good answer.\u00a0 Again, most items have their own packaging to protect them and really don&#8217;t require an extra bag. Embracing reusable bags will result in less litter, less consumption, less waste of resources and reduced cost for retailers.\u00a0 It&#8217;s time for a change, are you ready?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>&#8220;Infinite growth of material consumption in a finite world is an impossibility.&#8221; &#8212; E.F.
