This summer, Washington D.C. created a 5-cent disposable bag fee, aimed at keeping trash out of the city\u2019s waterways. Starting January 1, 2010, businesses selling food and alcohol will charge <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2009\/11\/16\/AR2009111603055.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">five cents for disposable plastic OR paper bags.<\/a> That money will go to the newly created Anacostia River Cleanup and Protection Fund, which will be used to remove trash from the river.<\/p>\n<p>The fee is the first in the country to apply to both plastic and paper bags. The awareness campaign, called <a href=\"http:\/\/green.dc.gov\/green\/cwp\/view,A,1231,Q,463137.asp\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cSkip the Bag, Save the River,\u201d<\/a> launched yesterday. Before the new law goes into effect, the D.C. Department of the Environment will distribute at least 100,000 free, reusable bags to D.C. residents, mainly seniors and low-income residents.<\/p>\n<p>The beige and blue bags feature the slogan \u201cSkip the Bag, Save the River.\u201d The city is also planning an advertising campaign to promote the reusable bags, which it will finance using the fees it collects. About $3.6 million in tax revenue is expected in the program\u2019s first year.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur message is simple: the bag fee is coming,\u201d Fenty said in a press release. \u201cI signed this law to cut down on the disposable bags that foul our waterways. But we want everyone to know that you can save the river, and 5 cents, if you bring your own reusable bag to the store instead.\u201d Wells said the program \u201cwill bring the District of Columbia to the front of the line in addressing pollution caused by disposable bags and takes much needed action to clean the Anacostia River.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, CVS is producing 12,000 similar bags with the chain\u2019s logo on the flip side while Safeway will produce 10,000 bags of unknown design. CVS is also distributing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bulletinbag.com\/blog\/jump-on-the-movement.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cGreen Bag Tag\u201d cards<\/a> that offer discounts to reusable bag customers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When everyone is on the same page, great things happen.
