We first introduced you to Abby Goldberg<\/a> three years ago (almost to the day!).<\/p>\n

As a 13 year old in 2012, she helped persuade former Illinois Governor Pat Quinn into vetoing legislation that would have created a statewide plastic bag recycling program, while at the same time forbidding local bans on plastic bag.<\/p>\n

As we predicted, Abby (now a high school junior) still has great passion for reducing plastic bag consumption.<\/p>\n

This month is Bring Your Own Bag Month in Abby\u2019s hometown of Grayslake, Il. Mayor Rhett Taylor said she was the driving force behind the resolution, approved last week.<\/p>\n

At least one local retailer has agreed to participate in the month-long educational effort to encourage shoppers to use reusable bags, but all Grayslake businesses are being encouraged to participate in cost-effective bag programs with reusable or cloth bags.<\/p>\n

The new thicker, \u201creusable\u201d plastic bags aren\u2019t a solution (read why here<\/a>). They can take up to 10 times longer to deteriorate than the regular plastic bags.<\/p>\n

As Abby says, “Just because you think plastic bags are a small problem doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be fixed. It’s such an easy solution. Stop giving them out for free and stop taking them.”<\/p>\n
